IELTS

English Proficiency Test

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test designed to measure English language proficiency. It evaluates skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. This test is managed by the British Council, IDP Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

IELTS offers two types of testing modules: Academic and General Training. The Academic module is intended for students who aim to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies. In contrast, the General Training module is required for those planning to undertake vocational studies or immigrate to an English-speaking country.

Test Format

In the actual exam, Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are conducted consecutively, lasting around 2 hours and 45 minutes in total.

Listening

Applicable for both Academic and General: 40 questions in 40 minutes.

Reading

Academic Module: 3 passages (40 questions) in 60 minutes.

General Module: 3 sections (40 questions) in 60 minutes.

Writing

Academic Module: 2 tasks (Diagram Prompt/Argument Prompt) in 60 minutes.

General Module: 2 tasks (Letter Prompt/Essay Prompt) in 60 minutes.

Speaking

Applicable for both Academic and General: 3 parts lasting 11 to 15 minutes.

Listening

The Listening section consists of four parts that increase in difficulty. The total duration is 40 minutes: 30 minutes for the test and an additional 10 minutes to transfer answers to an answer sheet. Each part, whether a monologue or a conversation, starts with a brief introduction about the context and speakers. Candidates have a moment to review the questions before listening. The first three parts include a pause for candidates to check the remaining questions. Each part is played only once. At the end, students are given 10 minutes to write their answers on the answer sheet.

Reading

This section evaluates your comprehension abilities. You will be given several passages from various sources and must answer different questions based on these texts. In the academic module, the reading test consists of three sections, each with a text followed by around 13 to 14 questions, totaling 40 questions. The General Training module also has three sections but includes shorter texts, so there may be up to five passages to read.

Speaking

This section assesses your proficiency in spoken English. Typically, it is scheduled separately from the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests. The Speaking test involves a one-on-one interview with an examiner and has three parts. The first part is an interview where candidates might discuss their hobbies, interests, reasons for taking the IELTS, and other general topics like clothing, free time, technology, and family. In the second part, candidates receive a topic card, have one minute to prepare, and then speak about the topic. The third part is a discussion between the examiner and the candidate on questions related to the topic from part two, which tends to be more abstract and challenging.

Writing

In the Academic module, there are two writing tasks: Task 1 requires candidates to describe a diagram, graph, process, or chart, and Task 2 involves responding to an argument. The General Training module also includes two tasks: Task 1 involves writing a letter or explaining a situation, and Task 2 requires writing an essay.

Scoring

IELTS is scored on a band scale from 0 to 9. Generally, an overall score of 6.5 bands with at least 6 bands in each section is required, which can pave the way for your overseas education in your chosen country.

Which materials will I use?

You will have access to specially designed materials by the British Council, along with guidance from a British Council Trained trainer to aid you throughout your learning journey.

What support do I get outside class?

Outside of class, you will receive free practice tests, approved study materials created by the British Council, and other self-study resources, all supported by a British Council Trained trainer.

Why are there two versions of the IELTS test?

IELTS offers two versions – Academic and General Training. The Academic test is for those aiming to study at a tertiary level in an English-speaking country. The General Training test is for those seeking work, vocational training, secondary education, or migration to an English-speaking country. Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests, but the Reading and Writing tests differ.

What documents can I use as ID (proof of identity) at the test centres?

You must present a valid passport when you take the test.

Who sets the 'pass' mark for the IELTS test?

There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Scores are graded on a 9-band system. Each institution or organisation determines its own required IELTS scores based on their specific needs. You can check the required scores for different organisations from the list of institutions that accept IELTS scores.

How soon can I re-appear for the IELTS test?

There are no restrictions on when you can retake the test. However, it is recommended that you consider your previous results and make additional preparations before attempting the test again.

Is the IELTS test completed in one day?

The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are always completed in a continuous sequence without a break. Depending on the test centre, the Speaking test may be scheduled before or after the main test date.

What is the IELTS Speaking test?

The Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with a certified IELTS Examiner. It consists of three parts and is recorded on an audiocassette or a digital recorder.
